(STACKER) – What exactly is American food? Defining it can sometimes be a challenge due to the country’s vast landscape and diversity, all of which contribute to the national cuisine. Hamburgers, milkshakes, and apple pie are easily considered “American” foods – foods that are easily available and enjoyed at thousands of McDonald’s locations worldwide. But America has unique delights and treats that cannot be found anywhere else and have not conquered the global taste buds.
While a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is at least familiar, if not popular, in virtually every corner of this country, the concept of a PB&J disgusts many in other countries. To further explore this phenomenon, Stacker, using reports from Tasting Table, Eater, Food & Wine, and various other sources, compiled a list of 20 uniquely American foods that might raise the eyebrows of anyone outside of the US.
