Baker and Sarno participate in the Springfield Roundtable discussion on local entrepreneurship

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Gov. Baker continued his visit to western Massachusetts on Tuesday, meeting with Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and other city leaders for a roundtable discussion at Valley Ventures.
The discussion focused on the important role entrepreneurs play in building the economy of western Massachusetts. Participants included the Western Mass Economic Development Council, Valley Venture Mentors and the Western Mass Founders Network.
The discussion aimed to raise awareness of successful economic developments in Greater Springfield, such as the EDC’s Anchor Cooperation. This initiative, explains Chief Development Officer Tim Sheehan, connects larger anchor institutions like universities and other large employers with small business owners.
“And what we are focused on is trying to share wealth and generally opportunities in terms of jobs that are available within these institutions, and also opportunities to contract so that we can help these emerging companies grow their businesses,” said Sheehan.
The hope is that this can help underserved communities in particular, such as minorities, women and LGBTQ entrepreneurs.
The EDC says this anchor collaboration continues to grow. It will work with foundations and organizations to fund local business development, skills training and job creation.
