Day 2 Prelims Live Recap

2022 FINA JUNIOR SWIMMING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day 2 of the 2022 World Junior Championships in Lima, Peru will feature boys 200 IM, girls 100 free, boys 100 fly, girls 200 fly, boys 200 free, mixed 4×100 medley relay and girls 800 free heats. Notably, the Girls 800 Free is a timed final, so the slowest 3 runs will be swum this morning and the fastest run will be swum with finals tonight.

Probably the most anticipated preliminary round event of the day is the Boys 200 Free, where the 17-year-old Romanian plays David Popovici goes into the meet with a really massive lead as the top seedling and this year the world’s fastest swimmer. Popovici is clocked in at 1:44.68, which is already fast enough, but don’t let that fool you. The phenomenon swam a 1:42.97 to win gold at the European Championships a few weeks ago, breaking the junior world record in that event. After breaking the junior world record in the 100m free twice on Day 1, this morning we’re waiting for Popovici to break the 1:46.40 championship record in the 200m free.

of Portugal Diogo Ribeiro broke the Portuguese record in the 100m at the European Championships a few weeks ago and competes this morning as the top seedling in the boys’ 100m. Ribeiro leads the Czech Republic with a time of 52.31 Daniel Gracik by just 0.38 seconds. of Brazil Pedro Sousa also comes in this morning with a time under 53 and comes in at 53.97 as the number 3 seed. We will keep an eye out for South Africa Pieter Coetze likewise after he broke the African record in the 100m backstroke in the semifinals last night.

After a solid 1:58 lead in front of Hungary’s girls 4×200 free relay last night, 16 years old Nicholas Padar enters Girls 100 Free this morning as a top seed. Padar is seeded at 54.69, which puts her in first place on the Psych sheet by almost a full second.
