EDWARDSVILLE — Two people, including an Edwardsville Police Department officer, were injured Friday night when the patrol car they were sitting in was struck by a pickup truck on Illinois 157.
The officer and a citizen in the police vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Edwardsville Police Chief Michael Fillback. Edwardsville Fire Department personnel transported each to area hospitals; both were released on Saturday morning.
Fillback reported two patrol vehicles assisting a motorist with a disabled vehicle in the southbound traffic lane on Illinois 157, just north of Center Grove Road.
Just after 9 p.m., the driver of a van traveling south slammed into the back of one of the squad cars. Inside the police vehicle were an officer and a citizen who had accompanied the officer on a drive. Fillback said the impact of the crash caused significant damage to the rear of the patrol car and the front of the pickup.
The driver of the truck was not injured, according to Fillback. He said Illinois State Police are investigating the incident.
