History BOCA RATON, Fla. — In anticipation of inclement weather on Sunday, the Florida Atlantic University Owls took to the field Saturday to set up a doubleheader with Conference USA member Charlotte. The Owls defeated the 49ers in Game 1 4-0 and were one out of a double sweep, but saw Charlotte win the nine-setter 3-2.
Gabby Sacco took the circle and continued her march through March holding Charlotte to just two hits and no runs. Sacco is 10-2 this season and holds a 1.08 ERA and a 0.00 C-USA ERA. She allowed just two runs, both earned, in 34 innings of work in March.
While holding the 49ers at bay, the offense got to work scoring a run, a home run from Oliva Peterson, in the fifth inning and scored three more runs in the sixth for the game’s 4-0 finale. .
Peterson’s home run was his third and leads the team. Two players, Cammeo Presutti and Peterson, had a multi-hit day. Presutti, who hits .469 [23-for-49] in March, was 2 for 3 with a run scored and Peterson was 2 for 3 with the hit/RBI winner and actually made three of the team’s four runs Game 2 of the day opened with Sacco returning to the circle for the first two innings, both scoreless and she allowed only one hit. Ainsley Lambert entered the game in third and held Charlotte scoreless for the next four innings and was just one out of claiming the win. Lambert got two quick outs in the top of the seventh, both fouls. The 49ers then scored two runs on four-two singles to even the score at 2-2. The game went to extra innings and both teams did not score until the eighth. Charlotte started the ninth with a solo homer left, then kept the Owls from scoring late in the inning for the 3-2 win.
Three pitchers were used, Sacco, Lambert, who suffered the loss falling to 3-3 this year, and Lynn Gardner, who got the last two outs of the game. A total of seven owls accounted for the team’s seven hits. his sixth double of the year The Owls will play a non-conference program this week with a double at Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday and a double at UNF on Wednesday.
