Fenty wins 100th career singles match with Michigan Falls at No. 4 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Andrew Fenty of the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men’s tennis team made history as the first Wolverine to reach 100 wins in doubles and singles as he reached the bar Singles Championship on Sunday, March 19) as the Wolverines fell 4-2 to No. 4 Ohio State in a non-conference game.
After OSU won the doubles point, only the fourth time Michigan failed to win the opening point this season, the Wolverines took control in singles winning sets in the first round of No. 1s. at 4. The tides changed when two of them went to a third set, two of which ended in tie-breaks.
10-ranked Ondrej Styler won his tie-break in the second set of singles No. 1, 7-6(4) over Cannon Kingsley to go with a 6-3 first-set victory to move to 15-3 on the season. In singles No. 2, Fenty, ranked No. 9, defeated No. 58 Justin Boulais in three sets. Fenty took the first 6-2 before a 7-6(4) tiebreaker went to Boulais. Fenty responded with a 6-2 final set to earn their 100th career singles victory.
The match ended with numbers 3 and 4 in singles, both in the third sets, as OSU took numbers 5 and 6 to take a 3-2 lead.
Gavin Young, ranked at No. 35, narrowly missed No. 20 JJ Tracy in a 6-4 third-round set at No. 4. It was only his third singles loss of the double season.
No. 17 Patrick Maloney’s match against No. 26 James Trotter was abandoned with a draw at 6-6 in the third set.
Michigan will begin conference play next weekend with a road swing through Wisconsin on Friday, March 24 at 6 p.m. CDT and Nebraska on Sunday, March 26 at noon CDT.
