DURHAM, NC (AP) — Nick Kurtz hit two solo homers and Wake Forest beat Notre Dame 7-5 to advance to the semifinals of the ACC tournament. Top-seeded Wake Forest, who ranks first in the coaches’ poll, meets No. 4-seeded Miami in the semifinals. Kurtz hit a home run for the lead at the bottom of the fifth inning. Brock Wilken was hit by a pitch and scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Hawke scored a single in the starting shot and Wake Forest stayed ahead. Notre Dame hit a run through No. 9-hitter Estevan Moreno’s RBI double in the third and leveled the game in the fourth with a two-run double from DM Jefferson and called through Zack Prajzner’s run in the fifth 4:3 in the lead – score twice.
DURHAM, NC (AP) — Yohandy Morales went 3-5 with a home run and four RBIs and Miami rallied to beat Duke 7-6 in the ACC Tournament group game. Miami (39-18) plays top-ranked and No. 1-seeded Wake Forest in Saturday’s semifinals. The ACC announced that both semifinal games will start at 1:00 p.m. ET at different locations due to weather conditions. Miami trailed two in game six before leveling and two again in game eight. CJ Kayfus led in the eighth with a solo shot, Morales hit his 14th home run of the season two batters later to equalize the 6-all equalizer, and Renzo Gonzalez added a lone go-ahead down the middle. Miami substitute Andrew Walters scored twice in the ninth game, making it his 11th save of the season.
DURHAM, NC (AP) – Caden Grice hit his 16th home run of the season, Jack Crighton hit two RBIs 2 for 3 and Clemson defeated Boston College 4-1 to reach the semifinals of the ACC tournament. Clemson (41-17) is looking to extend his 14-game winning streak against North Carolina on Saturday. Austin Gordon (2-4) secured the win by allowing just two hits, no runs and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings. Ryan Ammons was eliminated as the last batter for his fifth save of the year. Clemson hit Grice’s home run with two runs first in the first inning and Crighton added two runs with a double in the second inning. Nick Wang put Boston College (35-18) on point with a home run in the ninth game.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Kalei Harding went 2 for 4 with a two-RBI double, Kathryn Sandercock threw two scoreless innings for relief and Florida State defeated Georgia 4-2 to win the best-of-three Tallahassee Super Regional . Florida State achieved the 12th WCWS in program history. Harding hit a two-run double to give Florida State a 3-0 lead in the third. Mack Leonard, who had a five-pitch inning in the fourth before it came to a pitching change with an out in the fifth pitch, clinched the win. Sandercock, who conceded two hits and a walk with two strikeouts, made her ninth save of the season. Georgia had back-to-back hits early in the bottom half of the third inning but only managed one run on a groundout.
NORMAN, Oklahoma (AP) — Haley Lee hit a grand slam, Cydney Sanders and Alyssa Brito each hit a home run and top-ranked Oklahoma extended its winning streak to 47 with a 9-2 win over Clemson in the opening game of the Norman Super Regional. Oklahoma (55-1) equaled Arizona’s record of 47 straight Division I wins set in 1997. The Sooners are looking to break Saturday’s record in Game 2 of the best-of-three series with Clemson (49-11). . Oklahoma had two field errors in the fifth inning as Clemson came up 4-2, but the Sooners broke through in the bottom half with five straight hits, including a grand slam. Oklahoma’s first three batters of the fifth inning got their hits after just four pitches, and then Lee cleared the bases.
DURHAM, NC (AP) – Freshman NiJaree Canady scored nine in her 16th win of the season and 9th seed Stanford defeated 8th seed Duke 3-1 to open the Durham Super Regional. Stanford (44-13) earned his first Super Regionals win since defeating Alabama in 2011. Game 2 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Saturday. Stanford’s first hit came with an out early in the fifth inning. Kaitlyn Lim doubled into the gap in two runs, scoring first- and second-place runners and taking a 2-1 lead. It was Stanford’s 70th double of the season. Aly Kaneshiro delivered an RBI double with two outs for a two-run lead in the sixth set. Aminah Vega attempted a dive, but the ball bounced off her glove.
ATLANTA (AP) — Clint Castleberry had a glorious season at Georgia Tech. He was a whirlwind on both sides of the line and seemed to pop up everywhere. And then he was gone. All that potential snuffed out by the horrors of war. This Memorial Day weekend, Castleberry’s largely forgotten exploits are a grim, painful reminder of what might have been without the war. As a freshman in 1942, he placed third in the Heisman election. He then went into World War II, where he died piloting a B-26 off the coast of Africa. He was just 21.
