IKEA introduces the $15 VAPPEBY waterproof speaker

These days, buying a speaker is often seen as a long-term investment – or at least forced into it if you’re looking for a good one. And while sound quality is usually the first thing that springs to mind, convenience and budget prove equally important – and IKEA knows how to match the latter two like no other. The home furnishing giant’s all-new waterproof portable speaker strengthens its audio line while extending your listening time.

IKEA’s VAPPEBY range has already assembled a reliable catalog of gadgets, although the technology behind none of the models has been too intriguing. It’s a different story this time, as the small, IP67-rated iteration offers up to 80 hours of battery life when playing music at 50% volume – that’s over 50 hours more than you can expect from the Beosound Explore. Sure, you don’t get the superior sound quality you’d expect from Bang & Olufsen, but you do get practically enough music to last about half as long as you’re up in a week.

What’s more, the dustproof device can be submerged in water for up to 30 minutes, so there shouldn’t be any problems if you take it to spring poolside gatherings. You can also take part in an important pastime with the budget-friendly gadget: listening to music in the shower. Most importantly, you can even buy a pair of units to get stereo sound for a fraction of the price you would spend on most audio brands.
As mentioned earlier, affordability can play an important role when buying a new speaker, especially if you don’t consider yourself an audiophile. Luckily for all you casual lovers out there, IKEA’s VAPPEBY portable waterproof speaker is available in three colors — red, black, and yellow — for just $15 from its web store.
