JoJo Diaz vs. Mercito Gesta: live updates, results, highlights

The former world champion is taking the spotlight and entering the main event live on DAZN on Saturday night.

Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz wasn’t expecting to see the Golden Boy card of Saturday night’s main event live on DAZN. But now he’s in the spotlight in the main fight.

The former 135-pound interim world champion slips into the main event in light action against Mercito Gesta to officiate tonight’s main card from the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California. The card was originally going to be fronted by Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez vs. Gabe Rosado in a light heavyweight tilt, but the fight was scratched after Ramirez failed to gain weight on Friday.

Since defeating Javier Fortuna by unanimous decision in July 2021 to capture the WBC lightweight title, Diaz has lost to Devin Haney in December and to William Zepeda this past October — both by unanimous decision. That basically makes this fight against Gesta a must-win for 30-year-old Diaz (32-3-1 with 15 knockouts).

Gesta, 35, earned a unanimous decision victory over Joel Diaz Jr. in April 2022 to improve to 33-3-3 (17 KOs).

Follow DAZN here for all live updates, results and highlights of Diaz vs. Gesta, starting at 8pm ET.
