HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS UPDATE

Football team receives rings

Last Tuesday, May 23, the Laguna Beach High School 2022 football team reunited for the final time of the school year to celebrate their historic championship. To celebrate this achievement, each player received their long-awaited CIF ring.

Coach John Shanahan thanked the district and school authorities for their support, coaches Tim Crilly, Roger Romero, the school’s athletic facilities and the team’s assistant coaches. The Breakers went 11-4 last season, earning their second straight championship title and appearing in a fourth CIF title game. That season’s 36-28 win over Diamond Bar was Laguna’s first title since 1946, when they beat Barstow 20-0. Laguna lost the 1952 title game to Brawley and the 1962 contest to Brea-Olinda. The football title was the Southern Section’s 48th all-time CIF team sport title.

The event took place at the historic North High School, the oldest athletic facility on campus. The gym opened on December 11, 1936. The oldest building on campus is the Artist Theater, which hosted the eighth grade graduation in 1928, 95 years ago.

Laguna’s 2023 season begins Thursday, August 17 in Chino. Challenged in league play with Westminster, Breakers are expected to have a successful year, led by quarterback Jackson Pollock, tight end Ryner Swanson and running back Nick Rogers.
