Limitations of virtual reality learning in DE

Tsukuba, Japan – A team of researchers from Tsukuba University conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR)-based education system in improving the competency competency of radiology engineering students. While VR technology is widely used in games and business, its potential use in the medical field is also being explored, particularly for surgical simulations and technical training for medical staff. VR-based education systems have been proposed as an effective way to train radiology technicians to handle radiation-based medical devices without exposing them to harmful radiation. However, VR technology is still in the development phase and several challenges need to be overcome before it can be fully integrated into educational environments.
In this study, the team used a VR-based educational system to train radiology technologist students and assessed the impact of the training on their competency competency. Results showed that while some skills performed at similar levels of performance as traditional learning methods, certain skills that relied on tactile sensation and communication performed at significantly lower levels of performance. The study also found that self-assessments of some skills were significantly higher when self-taught.
This study highlights the challenges of implementing VR technology in education and emphasizes the need to develop more effective VR-based education systems.
