Matt Damon is the latest star to buy a property in this remote wooded oasis 50 minutes from New York

Matt Damon moves to upstate New York. The Oscar-winning actor, writer and producer recently acquired a sprawling estate in Westchester County. And he’s not the only A-list celebrity to call the remote wooded area home.
Matt Damon moves to Bedford, a town in Westchester County, New York

Damon prepares to call Bedford, NY his home (at one of his houses). The city is in Westchester County and is approximately 40 miles north of Manhattan. It includes the hamlets of Bedford Hills, Katonah and Bedford Village.
In terms of landscape, Bedford has nothing to do with Hollywood or Los Angeles. It is a wooded northeastern city adorned with pine forests, lakes and rivers. And as of 2010, the population was approximately 17,335.
But there is one aspect of Bedford that is similar to LA. According to the Wall Street Journal, it is considered one of the wealthiest communities in the country. Its appeal is that it’s about a 40-minute drive from Manhattan. And unlike the Hamptons — another New York neighborhood known for housing celebrities — it’s not overly expensive and has very little traffic.
Damon bought a sprawling estate in Bedford
A Massachusetts native, Damon moved to New York and then LA following the success of his Oscar-winning film. goodwill hunt. In 2012, he bought a home in Pacific Palisades for $12 million. And in early 2021, he listed the property for sale for $21 million.
By September 2021, Damon purchased a $17 million two-story penthouse in Brooklyn. And then he moved back to New York City with his wife Luciana and three children.
In July 2022, Damon purchased a sprawling 13.5-acre estate in Bedford Hills for $8.5 million. The colonial stone and clapboard building features a designer kitchen, saltwater pool, gym, coffee bar, pond and creek. It also features a tree house, greenhouse, barn and tennis court.
“Built in 2004 and completely renovated in 2021, the residence is simply stunning,” says the Zillow listing for the property. “All rooms on the main level open onto covered stone patios.”
“An incredible network of forest trails, pretty boardwalks and rope bridges surrounds the entire property,” it continues. “A rare and special opportunity to enjoy the country’s perfection.”
Damon hasn’t revealed why he bought a home in Bedford. But it may be because one of his good friends — college roommate Clark Petschek — has lived there for years. In July 2022, the actor became involved in Bedford politics when he supported Petschek in the city’s justice race.
Many celebrities live in Westchester County
Damon isn’t the only Hollywood celebrity to trade the glitz and glamor of LA for Westchester County. Celebrities such as Glen Close, Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas as well as Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have called the area home.
Martha Stewart, Ralph Lauren, Donald Trump and George Soros also have a home there. And in 2022, Ryan Murphy bought Richard Gere’s estate near Bedford for $24 million.
