Michigan college baseball player shot multiple times after game in Ohio

NEW CONCORD, OHIO – A member of the Olivet College baseball team was shot multiple times after a game in Ohio on Friday, March 17.
The as-yet-unidentified Olivet College athlete was returning to the dugout after the game to retrieve a personal item left behind when he was shot, according to Michigan College.
Olivet, a small liberal arts college between Lansing and Battle Creek, has about 1,000 students in 2020.
The baseball team was playing Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio on a four-game trip to Ohio.
Reports of gunshots were received by police at 7:03 p.m. Friday night at the Mose Moorehead baseball field. The Eastern Ohio College issued a shelter-in-place warning to its campus community at 7:23 p.m. while police searched for a suspect.
The Michigan baseball player was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he received treatment.
The suspect was taken into custody at 7:45 p.m. and the Ohio college raised its shelter on alert at 9:15 p.m.
In a statement Saturday morning, Olivet College said its student had non-life-threatening injuries and was in the care of his parents.
“The rest of the team are safe, stayed overnight safely at their hotel and are now returning to Olivet,” the college said. “The scheduled matches for Saturday and Sunday have been cancelled. The college is in communication with the student-athletes and their parents and will continue to provide support in the days ahead. This is a difficult time for everyone involved and our attention is focused on supporting student-athletes and staff members. Please keep your fellow comets in your thoughts and prayers.
New Concord, Ohio police said the shooting investigation is ongoing. Muskingum University Campus Police, New Concord Police and the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Department all responded to the shooting.
