ORLANDO, Fla. — The University of Michigan men’s track and field team opened the outdoor season Friday, March 17 with day one of the Black and Gold Invitational at the UCF Soccer & Track Complex.
With the best result of the day, Henry Sheldon took second place in the pole vault, clearing 5.03 meters (16ft, 6in). He took ninth place at this meet last year, showing impressive improvement since the 2022 outdoor season. Also on the court, freshmen Jake Wall and Luke Stowasser represented Wolverines in the long jump. It was collegiate debuts for both jumpers, who finished sixth and twelfth respectively.
In the throwing events, Zane Forist had a great day in his first outdoor collegiate encounter. The freshman saw two top-10 finishes, competing in the shot put and the discus. His shot put of 16.49 meters (54 feet, 1.25 inches) earned him fifth place in a field of 27 athletes. Forist also finished seventh in the discus throw, raising it to 50.79 meters (166ft, 7in). Eli Winter also competed in the discus, taking 11th place. The junior’s best throw in the event was 46.88 meters (153 feet, 9 inches).
On the track, freshman Kelston Richmond saw off a 10th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles his first outdoor collegiate meet with a time of 55.86 seconds. Michigan also had four athletes who competed in the 200 meters – Dubem Amene, Jacob Koerner, Lawrence Gilliam and Jack Juds. Amene finished 12th with a time of 21.27 and Koerner clocked a career outdoor best 21.49 to take 15th place. He was followed by Gilliam (22.05, 36th) and Juds (22.74, 56th).
The Wolverines will continue at the Black and Gold Invitational on Saturday, March 18 at 9 a.m. The action at the UCF Soccer & Track complex begins with Winter at the hammer throw.
