A multiple medalist at the South Carolina High School State Championships, Gardner Viney of Greer, South Carolina, has announced her college commitment to Southern Illinois for this fall. She plans to study psychology while at Carbondale.
Last fall, Viney completed her high school swimming career at the SCHSL 4A Swimming and Diving Championships, representing Riverside High School. Her best finish in the competition came in the 50 freestyle, where she stepped onto the podium with a lifetime best 24.16 to take third place. She also narrowly missed out on a second place finish in the top three in the 100m freestyle, taking fourth by three tenths of a second.
His senior season wasn’t the first time Viney was a two-event runner-up at a SCHSL state championship meet. During his junior year in 2021, Riverside competed in the 5A Championships, swimming against the biggest schools in the state. That year, she came away with a silver medal in the 100 freestyle, touching at 53.13. She finished fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.43).
While swimming for her club team, Y-Spartaquatics, Viney qualified for the B final of the 2022 YMCA National Long Course Championships last summer. There she took 14th place, touching in 27.55.

The Saluki women are coming off of fifth at the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The program was led at the competition by sophomore Celia Pulido who won the conference titles in both backstroke events for the second consecutive season. In 2022, Pulido became the first team member in over ten years to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Southern Illinois rookie Olivia Herron was also honored as freshman swimmer of the year at the meet after winning the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 breaststroke.
When she arrives on campus this fall, Viney will be able to have an immediate impact on the program’s free sprint group. In the 2022-23 school year, her best time in the 100m freestyle would have been third fastest on the team and her times in the 50m freestyle and 200m freestyle would also have placed her among the best in the team. crew. At the 2023 MVC Championships, she would have finished just before qualifying for the finals of her main events.
