No. 21 Bentley Downs No. 2 Florida Southern in overtime on Lupton’s goal

LAKELAND, Fla. — Senior Kenzie Lupton (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) scored 43 seconds into overtime to give No. 21-ranked Bentley a surprise 17-16 victory over No. 2-ranked Florida Southern on Saturday after -noon.
The Falcons have now won four straight and moved to 4-1 this season thanks to a sweep from their trip to Florida. They beat No. 18 St. Leo 13-12 in overtime on Thursday night.
Lupton scored on a free position shot from the right wing with a shot high and over the stick of Mocs goalie Rylie Rittberg. Senior Hannah Aronowitz (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) won control of the toss to start overtime and Bentley never lost possession.
The game ended in overtime thanks to the efforts of second-year goaltender Ashlee Wargo (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand). She saved a free position shot from FSC’s Lizzy Lynch with a second left in regulation time.
Wargo made 14 saves during the day, including five in the 4th quarter. Three of these stops occurred in the last five minutes of regulation.
Bentley led 11-7 at halftime with Courtney Dermody (Bedford, NH/Bedford) leading the attack with three goals. Senior Sydney Lynch (Bedford, NH/Bedford) added two goals in the 1st quarter.
The Falcons then held off a 7-2 run from the Mocs from the 3rd quarter until the start of the 4th quarter. It saw Bentley fall behind for the only time in the match at 14-13 with 10:58 remaining.
But Bentley responded with two back-to-back goals by Amanda Davis (Saunderstown, RI/La Salle) and Lynch to reclaim the lead at 15-14 with 8:25 remaining.
A Lupton goal with 3:56 left came between two FSC goals, the last from FSC’s Lynch with 1:55 left in regulation to tie the game 16-16.
Bentley won control of the next draw and had two shots wide, but possession resulted in a shot clock violation. It gave FSC the ball with a chance to win, but Wargo’s save on Lynch’s free position shot in the last second sent the game to OT.
