Governor Cooper criticized a budget proposal from the Republican-led state legislature. He says it does not adequately address the needs of public schools, especially teacher compensation. “The budget passed by the House and Senate is woefully lacking in the investments we need,” Governor Cooper said. “They’re diverting money where it doesn’t need to go. We’ve had situations where teachers feel like they’re not getting the respect they deserve, and that’s why we have more 5,000 teaching vacancies.” During his tour, Cooper met teachers like Jessica Glass, a first grade teacher. She says things need to change in the way educators are treated if people want to see the quality of education improve. “We will have more teachers who want to be on staff,” she said. “Will have more improvement with test scores with kids learning what they come to school to learn. I really think appreciation, pay, just telling teachers you care.” Cooper says that he asks North Carolinas to reach out to their legislators to demand these changes. North Carolina Republicans called his declaration of a state of emergency in public schools a publicity stunt. State Sen.
