“Nouvel and Valley Lutheran claim football district victories”

Nouvel Catholic and Valley Lutheran earned county soccer victories in the first round, setting up a third showdown between the Division 4 powers.
Nouvel earned a 7-1 victory over Montrose while Valley Lutheran defeated Laker High 4-0 in Thursday’s first round games. The team meets Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Valley Lutheran in the Division 4 District Semifinals.
Lydia Jacobs scored five goals in Nouvel’s win, giving her 35 goals in 17 games for the 12-4-1 Panthers. Emilee Rosenberg added two goals, giving her 30 goals this season.
Valley Lutheran improved to 12-2-3 by defeating Laker.
During the regular season, Nouvel earned a 3-1 win over the Chargers before a 1-1 draw.
In other soccer playoff games in the Saginaw region, Heritage lost 2-1 to Traverse City Central and Midland Dow beat Traverse City West 2-1 in Division 1. In Division 2, Mount Pleasant defeated Petoskey 1-0.
In Division 3, Unionville-Sebewaing defeated Birch Run 2-1 while Caro beat Marlette 6-2. Bullock Creek clinched a 2-1 win over Gladwin and Alma beat Clare 1-0 to progress, but Shepherd was knocked out 7-0 by Big Rapids.

Freeland defeated Shepherd 4-1, 10-0 in an out-of-conference doubleheader on Thursday. Luke McLaren won the first game, allowing one run and four hits and hitting eight in seven innings. Jacob Kowalski led the offensive with two goals. Ryan Quackenbush threw five shutout innings for the Game 2 win. Colin Dee and Mason Fleming had two hits each to lead the Falcons 23-10-1. Sanford Meridian picked up two wins outside of the conference, beating Coleman 17-3 and 14-3. In the first game, Eli Olmstead threw a two-hitter and hit four of them. Ethan Wetzel led the offense with four hits and three RBIs, with Chase Thurlow and Olmsted contributing two hits each. Robbie Edwards secured the nightcap win by conceding two hits in five innings. Reece Teer led the offense with three hits and three runs for the 19-14 Mustangs.
