Ohio softball splits Battle of the Bricks doubleheader with Miami

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ohio softball team (10-2, 1-0 MAC) opened Mid-American Conference play today (March 17) against rival Miami RedHawks (12- 8, 0-1 MAC), at Ohio Softball Champ. They won the first game of the doubleheader, 4-2, and lost in the second game, 7-6.


Individually, sophomore Emma Hoffner (New Stanton, Pa.) led the way, going 4 for 6 with three RBIs and three runs scored while junior Annalia Paoli (Point Marion, Pa.) recorded a .500 batting average. the day, finishing with three hits, a home run and three runs scored. Junior Sydney Grein (Mokena, Ill.) went 2-for-6 and recorded a team-high five RBIs, three of which were driven with a three-run homer.


On the mound, sophomore Skipp Miller (Bradford, Ohio) pitched all seven innings of Game 1, allowing two runs on five hits. Freshman Keegan Moore (South Point, Ohio) and graduate student Kylie Coffelt (Beloit, Ohio) split Game 2, recording nine strikeouts.


FIRST MATCH: Ohio 4, Miami 2
Miami quickly took a 2-0 lead with a solo homer and an RBI double, giving the RedHawks a 2-0 lead after the start of the first inning.


Ohio responded in a big way down the frame. With one out, junior Yasmine Logan (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) walked to a draw and moved up to second on a Paoli single. After the two advanced on a single at senior Dawe’s field (Valley Springs, Calif.), a two-RBI double from Hoffner tied the game at 2-2. Then with two outs, a two RBI single from Grein put Ohio up 4-2 after the first full inning of the game.


Ohio threatened to add more late in the third inning. After Dawe was hit by a pitch, she moved to second when Hoffner hit a field error, putting the runners first and second with no outs. However, the Bobcats were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the fourth inning with Ohio in the lead, 4-2.


The Bobcats held the RedHawks for the rest of the game, solidifying their 4-2 win.


SECOND GAME: Ohio 6, Miami 7
The RedHawks struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with two solo home runs. At the end of the inning, the Bobcats went up on the board with a groundout. After a two-run homer from Miami in the third, Ohio took the lead in the bottom of the inning. An RBI single from Hoffner kicked off, followed by a three-run homer from Grein to put the Bobcats ahead, 5-4.


Miami took the lead in the top of the fourth with its second two-run homer of the day, but Paoli responded low on the frame with his own solo shot, tying the game, 6-6. The RedHawks’ fifth homer of the day gave them a 7-6 lead heading into the seventh. Dawe started with a right-sided single, but the Bobcats failed to tie the game, losing 7-6.


Then the Bobcats will return to action on Saturday, March 18 for the third and final game in their Battle of the Bricks series. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the OSF.
