Persona 5 is getting a mobile spin-off with a new cast of characters

You read that right, Persona 5 is re-released, this time as a mobile and PC game, albeit featuring a new cast of characters.

If I had a nickel for every time Persona 5 was re-released, I don’t even know how many nickels I would have because it’s happened so many times. However, I know I would have another one as Persona 5: The Phantom X has just been revealed, an adaptation specifically of the fifth entry in the series for iOS, Android and Windows. There may be a small catch, however, as nothing is currently known about a release of the game outside of China.

As reported by IGN, the spin-off will receive a playtest starting March 29th in China and appears to be a full sequel to the original game. This time you play as a new group of Phantom Thieves (sorry to those who love the original crew) and have “Desire” as the main theme. Being a mobile game, it will be free to play with in-app purchases, although it’s not yet clear how these will manifest.

Unsurprisingly, you can do all the usual things you can in a Persona game: go to school during the day and watch movies or play baseball at night. And of course you can also infiltrate the Metaverse and various palaces. Based on some artwork shown for the game, the original cast will eventually make an appearance as well.

The game is being developed by Black Wings Game Studio and not P-Studio itself, but publisher Perfect World Games has said in a press release that Atlus is involved in development, and Persona character designer Shigenori Soejima helped create Phantom’s protagonist X

If you’re craving a Persona fix to tide you over until news of an international release arrives, Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden are now available in Game Pass, although whether the former will last is up for debate.
