Pixotope democratizes Extended Reality with the launch of the XR Edition

Pixotope today announced its XR Edition for extended reality productions, which will make its debut at IBC2022 from September 9th to 12th at stand 7.D08 at the RAI in Amsterdam. Developed in response to the growing trend of volume use of LEDs in virtual production and the need for hardware optimization, Pixotope’s XR Edition includes a suite of tools to simplify setup and operations by reducing the technical complexity and associated resource costs of XR workflows and environments are reduced.

“In the past, XR productions were limited to select teams with highly specialized technical resources,” he says David Dowling, Chief Revenue Officer of Pixotope. “With our XR Edition, Pixotope has developed an easy-to-use solution that enables wider adoption with tools specifically designed to address pain points such as color matching, LED networking and alignment, camera switching, hardware consolidation and system resiliency. As a result, XR is no longer limited to a small group of specialists, but a viable option for productions of any scale.”

Beyond simplifying and innovating workflows, XR Edition Virtual Production takes a step forward in sustainability efforts thanks to optimized hardware usage. Key features that achieve this are the XR Edition’s multi-wall support, which features one input and three outputs to render a virtual scene, allowing users to control multiple large LED volumes from a single server/workstation; and in-software camera switching to sync AR elements and LED walls without a hardware-based switcher.

The XR Edition will be available to new and existing Pixotope users from September 2022.

Augmented reality for everyone
With XR Edition, Pixotope is removing a major barrier to virtual production adoption by addressing the fundamental challenges that have historically made it difficult to deploy XR outside of large blockbuster productions. Its purpose-built tools address common operator pain points while eliminating the need for proprietary hardware, effectively giving users an out-of-the-box XR solution.

Key benefits and features of the XR Edition include:

Streamlined, simplified setup

Unique color matching feature for AR<->XR workflows
This unique color matching tool allows users to quickly and easily match the colors of the in-camera visual effects (ICVFX) and the colors appearing through the LED volume for seamless AR/XR workflows and effects. This is particularly useful when using augmented reality (AR) alongside XR for set expansion, or when adding virtual elements to a scene, as color rendering is affected by both the camera and LED volume, allowing for accurate color matching difficult.

LED mesh import and automatic alignment
Combining procedural geometry creation tools and tracking technology, users are provided with an automated method to convert CAD and geometry representations of LED volumes into virtual LED projection screens. These are further refined using computer vision to ensure perfect registrations for the XR and AR set extension, greatly reducing setup time.

Reduced and optimized hardware usage

Multi-input switching in software for changing perspectives
When using more than one camera in an XR setup, the images on your LED volume and your AR rendering must change perspective in sync when switching between cameras in a single frame. With in-software switching, Pixotope ensures this operation is accurate and hassle-free, with no additional hardware required.

Multi-wall support to optimize hardware usage
With multi-wall support, Pixotope can run multiple LED walls from a single server/workstation. Not only does this reduce the amount of hardware needed, and therefore costs, but it also alleviates many common issues such as output synchronization and asset sharing across multiple computers.

Resilient, robust and reliable

Health and diagnostic monitoring for failover and system resilience
When it comes to virtual live production, failure is not an option. With Pixotope, clear and comprehensive health and diagnostic monitoring allows users to proactively address any issues that arise and quickly troubleshoot and seamlessly fail over to a backup machine in the event of a system failure.
