GRANJENO, Texas – The residents of Granjeno had very poor broadband options and then along came SmartCom Phone & Internet.
The company installed a fiber optic network so the city would have the fastest upload and download speeds available in the Rio Grande Valley.
“It’s a game changer,” replied Jaime Cortez from Granjeno when asked how good SmartCom’s service was.
Another Granjeno resident, Rafael Garza, agreed.
“Fiber is an amazing step (forward) in technology for us,” Garza said. “It brings our community in touch with the rest of the world much faster and without disruption.”
Michael Lea Hilton, Sales Manager at SmartCom, explained the development of the project.
“SmartCom has a fiber optic network that serves many educational, commercial and government facilities in the Rio Grande Valley,” said Hilton. “Our fiber routes run near the town of Granjeno, so it made perfect sense for SmartCom to invest in this community and help them bridge the digital divide.”
Hilton said SmartCom met with Granjeno residents in October 2021 to discuss the company’s plans. Then, in 2022, the company used private funding to provide fiber to the home for homes along FM 494 and El Camino Real.
“SmartCom offers Internet speeds of up to one gigabit per second (Gbps) at prices starting at $69 for a 250 x 250 megabits per second (Mbps) connection,” said Hilton.
“Customers can also qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which can offer credits of up to $30 on their monthly Internet bill.”
Hilton added, “We repeated our success in Granjeno by installing fiber in homes in Progreso, Lopeño and Arroyo City. Our plan is to add more communities by the end of the year.”
