Donmar Warehouse and Tara Theater present the world premiere of Be silenta new piece after Kavita Puri Partition Voices: British Stories Untold, from 1.9.

Written by Sonali Bhattacharyya, Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, Ishy Din and Alexandra Wood, the production is playing at London’s Donmar Warehouse until September 17th, followed by an engagement at Tara, which begins September 21st and runs through October 1st.

Tara Theater Artistic Director Abdul Shayek directs the production, which stars Renu Brindle, Sujaya Dasgupta, Nimmi Harasgama, Bhasker Patel, Jay Saighal, Rehan Sheikh and Martin Turner.

The production marks 75 years since the partition of India in 1947 – which uprooted millions and led to unspeakable violence – and examines the legacy this brutal moment in history leaves us today.

Donmar Warehouse Artistic Director Michael Longhurst said in a previous statement: “We are delighted to be working with the Tara Theater for the first time on this important new play, specially commissioned to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the partition of India . The play tells the remarkable true stories of those involved in such a pivotal moment in history, inspired by exceptional testimony and recognition of events that need to be spoken about in Britain.”

Tara Theatre’s Shayek added: “As Britain holds up a mirror to the colonial history that has shaped our reality today, many of us are asking questions about our past and who we are. 2022 offers us the final major milestone before we lose the survivors and their living memories, giving us the opportunity to understand the human cost of what happened in 1947, retell the stories of those who survived partition and came to Britain. As a group of storytellers we will try to capture the unbiased documentation of these stories in Kavita’s book and the very real need to recognize that this is a shared story, this is our shared story, a British story, whatever the color of your skin.

The production also has designs by Rose Revitt, lighting design by Ciarán Cunningham, sound design and music by composer Elena Peña, and casting by Anna Cooper.
