CARY, NC — South Georgia Tormenta FC picked up their first win of the 2023 USL League One season after beating North Carolina FC on the road on Friday night. Mukwelle Akale scored Tormenta FC’s first goal of the season, securing Tormenta FC’s three points. Notably, South Georgia picked up their first season-opening victory since 2019, which was Tormenta FC’s inaugural professional season.
“This organization shows up when it means something,” commented Tormenta FC’s Ligue 1 head coach Ian Cameron. “We get the job done. The second half wasn’t all we wanted it to be, but our boys want to win football games, so they’ll do the dirty work and they’ll do the hard yards. They’ll do all the necessary work as well as the pressing, it is a very responsible group.
“They’ve just proven to themselves that they can go on the road like last year and win games against very high level opponents on opening night against a team that spent a lot of money during the opening night. offseason. We deserved to win the game. We scored the goal. The second half would have been different if it had been equal, but we scored the goal. We controlled the game in the second half even without the ball, and we are very proud of the team.”
Throughout the first half, South Georgia were able to play their game in front of a packed crowd, with several chances on either side. In the 35th minute, South Georgia managed to find the back of the net after John Murphy Jr. located Akale on the right side of the field. The nimble-footed winger received the ball and quickly took off down the wing. As he approached the net, Akale looked up and saw the keeper out of position. With pinpoint accuracy, the low shot crossed the goal line and rolled into the bottom corner of the net.
Throughout the second half, North Carolina FC pressed to try and get the equalizer; however, his attempts failed.
Davey Mason, Preston Kilwien, Elijah Amo, Nick Akoto, Jackson Khoury, Pedro Fonseca, John Murphy Jr., Matheus Cassini and Andrew Akindele all made their debuts for Tormenta FC this Saturday night.
“Today was great. It’s great to play in front of crowds, to play with a new team,” commented Akoto. “I just tried to play my best, to help the team get a win and a clean sheet. That’s what I’m here for.”
Tormenta FC are set to open their season title defense at home against the Charlotte Independence on Saturday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. ET from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia.
South Georgia is poised to make a strong push for the league title in the upcoming season. Fans can reserve their seats at the new Tormenta Stadium ahead of 2023, with season passes now available for purchase.
