Mark Rigsby, Associate Professor and Museum Director, states that the works in the faculty exhibit reflect the artistic excellence of the Southern Miss faculty.
“Our 2020 faculty show was an online show due to the pandemic, so we’re really excited to be back at the gallery with this biannual show,” said Rigsby. “This year’s exhibition includes works from our areas of expertise, including painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and digital photography. As an added bonus, we are delighted that art historian Dr. Jennifer Courts will be giving a talk as part of the exhibition.”
In the research paper titled “Painting Court Performance in the Franco-Flemish Fifteenth Century,” Dr. Courts provides a reason for the remarkable veracity of Northern Renaissance painting by viewing it as a means for members of the emerging merchant class to demonstrate their position in courtly society through the re-establishment of their physical presence in the performative space of the royal court.
“The importance of painting in the Franco-Flemish North was not fixed in the 15th century,” explained Dr. courts “My project explores a valence of painting by emphasizing its ability to recreate the lavish interiors of royal courts and the activities that took place within. Oil on panel became popular for its ability to accurately represent people, objects and places of the material world, and ultimately I explore the relationship between static art and stage performance.”
The exhibition can be viewed in the George Hurst Building Gallery of Art and Design from Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm. For questions about the faculty exhibition, please contact Mark Rigsby at 601.266.5200.
