Driver in critical condition after collision with shop

COMSTOCK PARK, Michigan — A man is in critical condition after driving a vehicle into a Kent County store while leading police in a car chase.

The accident happened around 2 a.m. Friday morning at the Kent Cash Outlet Inc. pawn shop on the corner of West River Drive and Lamoreaux Drive, just after 2 a.m. Friday.

A Kent County officer had attempted to stop the driver, who did not have taillights. The driver led the deputy in a chase and lost control on eastbound Lamoreaux Drive while attempting to make a high-speed turn near West River Drive.

The driver, a 29-year-old man, was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is in critical condition.

Officials say they are investigating whether speed and drug use were to blame for the crash.

The crash caused significant damage to the building.

The intersection was closed for several hours for investigation. A small section of Lamoreaux Drive was closed until about 8 a.m. All roads have now been reopened.

Several agencies responded to the incident, including the Plainfield Community Fire Department, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police.

The crash is still under investigation.
