Feminist Icon Gloria Steinem Addresses Government Officials Via the Internet Tuesday :: WRAL.com

Feminist icon Gloria Steinem will speak with state employees at a virtual event Tuesday, according to the North Carolina Office of State Human Resources.

State Department Secretary for Administration Pamela Cashwell will interview Steinem for the hour-and-a-half webinar, which will be streamed online starting at 1 p.m

The event marks Women’s Equality Day and is titled ‘A Conversation with Gloria Steinem: The Situation of Women’.

“Reg. [Roy] Cooper has made it a priority of his administration that our state’s 5.2 million women deserve equal opportunities, equal pay and equal respect,” said Barbara Gibson, the state’s human resources director, in a press release announcing the talk . “These are among the issues that Gloria Steinem has campaigned for her entire life.”

Steinem is the latest speaker to attend the State Equal Opportunity Lunch and Learning webinars, but according to Jill Lucas, spokeswoman for the Office of State Human Resources, this is the first to be streamed live on YouTube. Speakers don’t get paid, Lucas said.

“You are all generous with your time and sharing a timely message with an interested audience,” Lucas said in an email.

The broadcast includes American Sign Language interpreters and can be viewed later via the YouTube link and the Office of State Human Resources webinar page.

“We are pleased to offer this opportunity to government officials and the public,” Lucas said.
