Virginia Tech students of all disciplines have the opportunity to find out if they have what it takes to be an entrepreneur for 24 hours. The first-ever Startup Weekend, hosted by the Apex Center for Entrepreneurs, takes students through the steps of creating a startup, from idea to execution.

“We’re always looking for ways to provide students with hands-on ‘laboratory’ experiences in entrepreneurship,” said Derick Maggard, executive director of the Apex Center for Entrepreneurs. “Startup weekends from institutions like TechStars have a national following among entrepreneurs, so we’re really excited to be able to offer these kinds of incredible experiences for students again.”

Maggard continued, “Startup Weekend is an opportunity for students to get a taste of the entrepreneurial journey in a compressed time frame. This event is especially fun as we are hosting a cohort of students from Germany’s Fulbright Summer Institute who will attend alongside students from Virginia Tech.”

Startup Weekend kicks off Friday, September 2nd at 4pm with a presentation from Chris Cunningham, alumnus of Pamplin and co-founder of ClickUp. Startup ideas are then developed on site (no ready-made plans, please) and teams are formed. On Saturday, September 3, teams will work with entrepreneur mentors to help them turn their emerging ideas into reality. The award ceremony will take place at the end of the Saturday session.

“The event is about learning alongside and from others as you work together to solve interesting problems,” said Sean Collins, executive director of Startup Hokies’ program portfolio at the Apex Center for Entrepreneurs. “We’ve seen these kinds of experiences transform people’s career paths. Whether it’s pursuing their passion full-time through a startup, starting a side job, or discussing something specific with recruiters that will lead to an internship or job opportunity.

Collins continued, “This is also where lasting friendships and future collaborations are formed. While the event only lasts 24 hours, creating something from nothing is an intense experience. As the saying goes: pressure creates diamonds!”
